Summary
Oligomenorrhoea is defined as infrequent menstrual periods, with cycles longer than 35 days. It is commonly linked to PCOS, hormonal treatments, thyroid disease, diabetes, eating disorders, and certain medications, management includes hormonal therapies (COCP, IUS, HRT in premature ovarian failure), treatment of endocrine disorders, and surgical intervention when necessary.

Menstrual disorder characterised by infrequent periods, typically occurring in women of reproductive age, specifically when menstrual cycles occur at intervals of more than 35 days.
Etiology/Causes
- PCOS
- Contraceptive/Hormonal treatments
- Perimenopause
- Thyroid disease/Diabetes
- Eating disorders/excessive exercise
- Medications e.g. anti-psychotics, anti-epileptics
Management
- Hormonal Regulation and Symptom Control:
- Combined oral contraceptive pill (COCP), progestin-only pill, or intrauterine system (IUS).
- Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) with estrogen ± progesterone is essential in premature ovarian failure to protect against bone loss, cardiovascular disease, and endometrial cancer.
- Thyroid treatment if applicable.
- Surgery.
